Correspondence with Governor José Figueroa, 1834 Jun.

Contemporary copies (in secretarial hand, dated June 21, 1834) of two letters (Santa Barbara, June 4 and 5, 1834) from Father Narciso Durán, President of the California missions, to Governor José Figueroa and of Figueroa's reply (Monterey, June 30, 1834). Duran attempts to clear himself of accusations of disloyalty to the Mexican government, brought by Father Blas Ordaz with the support of the new Administrator and two soldiers. Duran makes his defense at length and requests an investigation. Figueroa's reply notes that Duran has no motive to ask for religious immunity if he is innocent. and promised an investigation and punishment for the guilty parties. Copies certified by Agustin V. Zamorano.
